August 29th-September 2nd: and the PLOT continues......

It's been a great week of teaching the plot elements with Pixar shorts as a type of text to practice with. We have done a gradual release teaching method where we first did plot charts as a class, then as a group at our tables, next with a partner, and finally independently. Students have worked hard to focus on the lessons and are demonstrating they are understanding the concept.

As part of this unit, students need to practice vocabulary words on Quizlet--4 sessions, 15 minutes long. Parents or teachers can initial the completion. They can practice at school during FLEX, in classes (if time), before or after school in my room, or at home. Here is the direct link: Plot Elements Quizlet

This next week will be awesome! We will begin to review the elements of plot, have our first library day of the school year, and take our first common formative assessment to see how students are mastering this concept.

Many students have stayed on track and have completed their first book! If they haven't finished yet--all is not lost! As soon as they finish their first book, I will adjust their grade. I know it will take some practice to get used to this process. Students need to finish their book then fill out the Book Tracker form on my website. Please remind your student to make sure they are remembering to read at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week so they can stay on track for iRead book due dates.

If you are wondering why we ask 7th graders to read so much, here is a comment from Mrs. Robins, the Language Arts department head for 7th grade:

"Some people have asked me why we require so much reading in 7th grade. My reply is that our end goal is to create lifelong readers, and the only way to be a better reader, is to, well...read. Check out this article in an interview by Donalyn Miller (teacher/researcher) who makes a solid argument for how good readers are created: Are Good Readers Born or Made?"

August 22-26.....PLOT!

We have been working on learning classroom procedures and participating in getting-to-know-you activities. Now it's time to get down to the business of Language Arts! We will be learning about the plot chart cycle with different mediums, including film (Pixar shorts), children's book and short stories. We've finished taking our reading and writing benchmarks which will give me a snapshot of where each of my students are in these areas and help drive my instruction.

Our iRead program is a powerful program that promotes reading. I sent a form home with the students and emailed parents, but we are still gathering donations from sponsors for the iRead shirts. Any contribution is much appreciated. If you need to access the form, you can find it here: iRead Support Letter

This is going to be a fantastic year! Please email me if you have questions or concerns at jandi.gubler@washk12.org/435-652-4742

Back to School Night Success!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Many thanks to those who were able to attend Back-to-School night. It was fun to meet you and put names and faces together.

If you could not be there, I am attaching a form for iRead program donations. The iRead program is amazing and we've seen fantastic results with helping students read. It does cost quite a bit to fund the program which provides incentives for students as they complete their reading. We would be so grateful if your business (or business you work for) might donate to our program. In exchange for their donation, their logo will be on our shirt. We are also accepting donations of fun size candy bars or cards for things around town. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I am also including an attachment for the iRead program information, which can be found on my blog, mrsgublersla7.blogspot.com.

The other attached form is what I handed out at back to school night to review our joint responsibilities as we work, with your child, for their success. The students this year are fantastic and I'm so excited to be able to spend the school year with them.

Thank you so much for all you do,
Mrs. Jandi Gubler

Welcome Back to School!

Hi! Welcome to 7th grade Language Arts. This is my first year teaching at Lava Ridge Intermediate School, and I am looking forward to a great year with my students. Please be patient with me while I am learning how things work at LRIS-one of the new skills I am learning is how to create and keep up a classroom blog!

Back to School Night is Tuesday, August 16th, from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm. I hope to see you there. School Picture Day is also on Tuesday the 16th.
